The Concept
Rain water flows to the Old Emscher River through a sophisticated water system.
Spouts and gutters carry rain and storm water to two "cooling water ponds" which are water basins at the locations of two demolished cooling towers near the gasholder. When the first basin is full, the water is discharged across a barrier into the second basin which is drained through an open trench into the ponds and eventually the Old Emscher River.
This system of spouts and dams retains rain water and maintains water flow to the Old Emscher River even during an extended dry period. The water system helps, of course, to create an even greater Park experience. A visit on a rainy day is therefore never wasted.
