Cast House
Pig iron was tapped in the Cast House every two hours. The hot iron flowed directly from the blast furnace through troughs and runners into sand molds where it solidified into pigs, as the blocks of iron are called. These pigs were cooled by water, removed from the molds and transported to the foundry or the steel mill for processing. The broken brickwork of the walls served to improve ventilation and to dissipate some of the heat.
Since the mid-nineties, the Cast House has been used for concerts, theater performances and open-air movie shows. To upgrade the facilities, a mobile roof will soon be installed to protect the entire grandstand audience against rain.
